SIT is a multi-purpose terminal and will be the largest intermodal terminal ever built in Australia. It is the most feasible endpoint for Inland Rail in Melbourne and the northern part of the Federal and State Government's Port Rail Shuttle Network. SIT will have have 1 million TEUs of capacity in Phase 1 and with Phase 2 up to 2 million TEUs.. Two new intermodal terminals are proposed to be built in Melbourne to provide an efficient freight interface with the Inland Rail Freight Corridor at its southern end, and accommodate double-stacked 1,800-metre freight trains. The Outer Metropolitan Ring - South Rail Connection will support the Western Interstate Freight Terminal (WIFT).
