The Shah Jahan Mosque at Woking was Britain's first purpose-built mosque. It was established in 1889 by the Jewish ex-Registrar of the University of Punjab, Gottlieb Leitner, with financial backing from the Begum Shah Jahan of Bhopal.It fell into disuse after Leitner's death in 1899, but was later resurrected by the Indian lawyer Khwaja Kamuluddin, who established the Woking Muslim Mission.. Please avoid visiting on Fridays and at prayer times (usually 1-2pm). Directions: 149 Oriental Road, Woking GU22 7BA. The mosque is a short walk (15 minutes) from the south side of Woking Railway Station, close to Lion Retail Park. About Us. The Shah Jahan Mosque (Woking Mosque Fund and Sir Salar Jung Memorial House), built in 1889 by Dr Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, was the first mosque to be built in the UK and Northern Europe. The mosque is situated on Oriental Road in Woking, about three quarters of a mile from the railway station and town centre.. The Shah Jahan Mosque was built in 1889 by Hungarian-British Orientalist Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner. It was partly funded by Sultan Shah Jahan Begum of Bhopal, as a place for students at the Oriental Institute in Woking to worship at. The mosque was designed by architect William Isaac Chambers (1847-1924) and built in Bath and Bargate stone.
